This week on the Raised Catholic podcast, we’re looking at two stories that have been in the news - a professional football player’s divisive comments in a commencement speech at at conservative Catholic college and Pope Francis’s interview with CBS’s Norah O’Donnell in which he offered a solid ‘no’ to the idea of women deacons even in light of current study and synod discussion on the topic - and we reckon with the reaction and the reality of the state of the Church and women’s place in it.
I’m sorry to say that this isn’t the most hopeful episode of Raised Catholic you’ll ever hear, but in light of the reality of Pentecost, I’m working to put my hope where it belongs - not in the Church but in the Spirit of God. It’s possible we disagree on this topic and that’s okay - all are welcome here - but for those trying to make sense of the words of Pope Francis in light of the hope of the Synod and a listening church, I hope this is a place for us to wrestle it out together.
Listen to Raised Catholic episode 178: Women in the Church on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts (or read the transcript) and then let’s meet back here in the comments for an honest and respectful discussion about where we are and where we’re headed in this Church of ours.
See you there.
