Hi friends. As I explained last week, we’re into a new series on the Raised Catholic podcast all about discerning, understanding, and owning our belief system for ourselves as we take our beliefs out for air and line them up with what Jesus actually said and taught along with our own prayer and contemplation. What our Protestant friends often call ‘faith deconstruction’ is not something with which we Catholics are too familiar, but understanding and owning our faith for ourselves is something that every mature Christian should do.
This week we’re coming in hot with an episode on voting and civic engagement. Just as in every episode in this series, this one will be descriptive and not prescriptive as I model my own process for deciding these things, but I’ll never tell you* how you should approach them as a grown-up Catholic - that’s between you and the Lord!
Some things we’ll cover include:
whether a person of faith should engage in politics
how a person of faith should decide their vote
how there is no such thing as a ‘Catholic vote’ or a ‘Jesus-endorsed party or candidate’
how to speak to/about and treat people who vote differently from us
So, you know, just easy-breezy content for you! ;)
As in every episode, I have lots of resources in the show notes of the episode which will help you explore this topic on your own. I hope it’s all helpful as you navigate this political season as a person of faith.
Listen to Raised Catholic episode 193: Grown-Up Catholicism: Voting & Political Engagement on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts (or read the transcript), and then come on back here to the comments** to talk about how you bring your faith and whole self to your decisions around voting and politics, or about some of the challenges you’re facing where you are. I hope to see you there.
