This week on the Raised Catholic podcast, I describe two days that were full of connection: with my preschool music students, at a fundraiser for my favorite non-profit, while voting in my local election, with a friend over lunch and a movie and with my kids and their partners for dinner and poker. Each interaction was enriching, joyful and okay, I’ll just say it, holy. And it wasn’t because we prayed (we did not) or because we were doing anything religious (we weren’t) but because in each interaction, I noticed the connection we had to each other, and how God’s Providential hand had been behind it all. Gosh, I’m grateful.
When we trace back our experiences, encounters, and interactions with an eye toward how God first connected our lives and spaces together in the first place, His kindness can really blow us away.
How did I first meet that friend whose understanding means the world to me?
How am I a preschool music teacher, a job I really love to do?
How did a group of the very best people I know welcome me into their community?
How is it that each time I go to vote, I’ll almost certainly run into a ton of people in the polling place who know me?
How did these good things even happen in the first place, and what is the fruit of these connections, of all of these interactions and community in my life and their lives and for the glory of God?
When we take the time to notice these things, we can fill with gratitude and also position ourselves to ask God to make even more connections in us to make our lives the most fruitful they can be. This is a prayer God will always answer, because God’s work is accomplished through us. We’re His body, His hands, and the beauty of these connections is the most gorgeous tapestry that we will, by the grace of God, one day see in all its fullness.
